abstract = "The present article brings spatial-temporal analyses at monthly
and seasonal time scales from the 15-year time series (2002-2016)
of ocean color remote sensing chlorophyll-a images from MODIS/NASA
sensor in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Mean and standard
deviation of chlorophyll images have shown the distribution
patterns already discussed in several works in the study area. On
the other hand, analysis of monthly anomaly images showed that the
austral winter of 2016 presented the most intense positive anomaly
of chlorophyll-a in the last 15 years. Superficial currents data
from OSCAR project were used to demonstrate that the austral
winter of 2016 was strongly influenced by anomalous strong coastal
currents flowing northward. We suggest this was responsible to
bring nutrient-rich water from higher latitudes to explain the
exceptional increase in phytoplankton biomass on the South
Brazilian Continental Shelf during austral winter of 2016 as
                         observed by satellite images.",
